Single vs Three Phase EV Charging at Home: What Actually Matters

Bigger numbers sell chargers, but the right answer depends on two ceilings: what your home's supply can deliver and what your car's onboard AC charger can accept.

The practical numbers

Three-phase charger11–22kW60–120km4–7 hrs

The catch most people miss

Many popular EVs cap AC charging at 11kW — some at 7kW. A 22kW charger can't push past your car's onboard limit. Check your vehicle's AC charging spec before paying for three-phase hardware.

When three-phase is worth it

For most Sydney households, a smart single-phase 7kW unit on an off-peak tariff is the value pick — it fills the car every night for the least money.
